Project Overview and Initial Details

In mid-November, our dedicated team embarked on an exciting project that involved replacing an existing front patio and steps with a striking new stamped concrete patio. Beginning on November 14 and wrapping up the major work by November 15, the project revolved around meticulous planning and precise execution to ensure it met the homeowner’s vision and needs. The previous patio had suffered from issues such as bubbling and detachment, primarily due to an overlay that hadn’t adhered well over time. In addition to this, the homeowner explained to us when we started the project that she had negative slope, so drainage was coming into the home. This of course causes damage over time.

For the new stamped concrete patio, the homeowner decided that this time, they would install integral colored concrete, which not only promised better durability but also enhanced aesthetic appeal, ensuring a beautiful finish that would last for years to come.

Project Specifications and Material Selection

Initially, the homeowner considered using a skin stamp similar to the previous overlay but eventually opted for a more distinct and eye-catching look. After careful consideration, the choice landed on a European fan stamp pattern, paired with an elegant Fox red color sourced from the Brickform or Solomon line. This selection not only offered a unique aesthetic but also complemented the existing architecture and landscaping of the home, creating a cohesive and inviting outdoor atmosphere.

To ensure longevity and stability, the structural foundation of the new patio was reinforced with a robust rebar grid. We used number three rebar, each three-eighths of an inch in diameter, arranged in a grid every two feet on center. This grid was carefully lifted two inches to ensure it was embedded in the middle of the four-inch-thick concrete, providing optimal strength and stability for the heavy foot traffic expected in this busy entrance area.

Concrete Pouring and Stamping Process

Pouring concrete is a critical phase that demands precision and attention to detail. For this project, our team utilized a ground line pump to ensure a seamless and efficient pour for both the patio and the steps, minimizing the risk of air pockets or flaws in the finish. While the European fan stamp was expertly applied to the patio surface, the steps required a different approach to maintain both durability and visual appeal. Due to the pattern’s tendency to chip and crack on steps, we opted for a skin stamp instead, ensuring both durability and visual continuity across the entire entryway.

The stamped steps were meticulously designed to withstand foot traffic and the elements, providing a practical yet aesthetically pleasing entryway that warmly welcomes guests while enhancing the home’s overall charm.

Project Timeline and Final Steps

By November 17, all major aspects of the project had been completed, including the vital relief cuts necessary for the stamped concrete patio’s longevity and performance. These cuts help to manage cracking that can occur as the concrete cures and settles over time. The final tasks awaiting completion involved carefully removing the cantilever forms, applying the final color enhancements, and sealing the patio to protect it from the unpredictable Denver weather. These finishing touches were scheduled to be completed within the same week, with an overall project duration of about five to six days, allowing the homeowner to enjoy their new outdoor space without delay.

The total cost for this beautiful transformation was $6,000, a worthwhile investment for a quality outdoor space that significantly enhances the property’s value and functionality, providing a perfect setting for family gatherings or outdoor entertaining.
